AFA 20th Anniversary

20th Anniversary 120 www.afamag.com |  www.incollect.com One of the tavern galleries includes paintings by noted Pennsylvania German artists such as Jacob Eichholtz, Jacob Maentel, Hattie Brunner, and Trappe native David Ellinger, alongside painted furniture. Above a magnificent painted chest with black unicorn decoration—made for Catarina Zumbro of Bern Township, Berks County, in 1784—is a landscape by Charles Hofmann (1821– 1882) of the Montgomery County almshouse overlooking the Schuylkill River; it was painted in 1874 and descended in a local Trappe family (Dietrich American Foundation [6.4.1023]). Hofmann also painted the horse-drawn carriage scene that hangs above the fireplace (Historic Trappe). In the corner stands a tall clock made by clockmaker George Hagey (1808–1887), who lived and worked in Trappe from 1832 to 1844; its elaborate Empire case is made of cherry with a mahogany door and ebonized quarter columns (Historic Trappe). The fireplace holds a cast iron stove plate, dated 1741, depicting the biblical story of Cain and Abel.
