AFA 20th Anniversary

NAVASSA ISLAND This unsigned painting documents the guano mines on tiny Navassa Island, a US Territory located between Haiti and Jamaica. Mining began in 1865 by the Navassa Phosphate Company of Baltimore using African-American laborers.The company’s barque, the “SS Romance” is shown in the harbor of Lulu Bay. Oil on canvas, circa 1870.
