Treasures of American folk art, early 19th-century walls—which include murals, freehand brushwork, and stenciled decoration—are vulnerable to destruction and loss. Their preservation needs become increasingly urgent over time, in particular for walls in private homes. The symposium is timed to coincide with Rufus Porter’s Curious World: Art and Invention in America, 1815–1860, an exhibition at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Bowdoin, Maine, through May 31, 2020.
