After studying at the Kansas City School of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago, Mulhaupt went abroad for several years, and was introduced to the tech- niques of Impressionism. Upon his return to America, he settled in New York while spending the warmer months in Gloucester. He worked from his studio on Rocky Neck and eventually founded the North Shore Arts Association. Despite being well-known for his port scenes, Mulhaupt applied his talents to inland set- tings as well, designing unified scenes using his distinctive earthy palette. He exhibited frequently at major venues including the National Academy of De- sign, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Highly regarded, he was often the recipient of exhibition prizes, including awards at the Allied Artists of America, the National Arts Club, and the Philadelphia World’s Fair in 1926.
