AFA Autumn 2018

2018 Antiques & Fine Art 117 Winslow Homer (1836–1910), Resting Shepherdess, 1877. Painted and glazed ceramic tiles, 8 x 16 inches. Heckscher Museum of Art; Partial gift of Karen H. Bechtel in memory of Ronald G. Pisano and partial museum purchase with funds from the Acquisition Fund, the Eva Gatling Fund, and the Baker/Pisano Fund (2005.2). After the club’s last summer trip, they settled into their new headquarters in the lower levels of Edwin Abbey and Alfred Parsons’ studio at 58 ½ West Tenth Street. From the street, members negotiated a discreet passage to its entrance. From there, Tilers walked into a rich interior designed by Stanford White—deep red curtains and paintings hung on the redwood- paneled walls, two large white-tiled fireplaces were positioned at either end, and a grand piano and miscellaneous furniture and bric-a-brac f illed the room. White also designed what might be considered a culmination of the group’s decade-long existence, A Book of the Tile Club , lavishly illustrated and written by Francis Hopkinson Smith and Earl Shinn.
