Enthusiasm for Rowan County’s Bicentennial celebration in 1953 was the impetus for the museum’s founding, which opened the following year in the Federal-era Utzman-Chambers House. The museum has since expanded to include an 1854 Courthouse housing the museum offices; the 1766 “Old Stone House,” a colonial house museum; an early 20th-century flour mill; and, in 2017, properties and structures adjacent to the former Salisbury Confederate War Prison and the guard house. Plans are in the works to develop this area into a visitor destination. Dedicated staff and volunteers use these historic sites to enrich the lives of students of all ages through field trips, exhibits, history camps, history classes, history clubs, tours, and reenactments. Please join the Rowan Museum in celebration of its milestone year by attending the antiques show and experiencing the historic activities in Rowan County. Revolutionary-era reenactment held at the Old Stone House, one of many educational events hosted by the Rowan Museum. © Bruce Stambaugh 2017.
