He left his homeland during political turmoil of 1820–1821 and ended up on the East Coast painting views of Philadelphia and New York. He was in New York during the great fire and sketched and painted a series of gouache paintings which established his reputation as an recognized artist. He painted quite a few views of the Waterworks in Philadelphia and views of the Schuykill River showing the old canals. His works are recognizable by his use of soft delicate colors and fine details throughout particularly in the tress and their leaves. His paintings have a luminosity of color about them which is seen in so many Italian paintings. This is an unusual oil on canvas by him not a gouache but it still exhibits his delicate brush and wonderful compelling use of color.
