BITTEL DUNCAN McFARLANE 1818–1865 The famous ship “North America” off Point Lynas, Anglesey in-bound to Liverpool McFarlane was mostly renowned for his oil paintings of American ships off the British coast, but there are a few, rare watercolors that are easily attributed to him. This “North America” painting is almost identical to his of “the Ontario” in the Peabdy Essex Museum in Salem, Mass. 32 x 42¼ inches, incl. later frame. The “North America” was built as an extreme clipper in 1851 and was owned by Nickerson & Co., Boston. The American ship “William Penn” signaling for a Liverpool pilot off the British coast McFarlane rarely signed his paintings and this is attributed to him based on other known works. It is a recognizable scene of his with the ship waiting for the pilot boat’s help coming into Liverpool 26 x 36 inches, incl. frame. The “William Penn” was owned by Richardson & Co., New York and traveled between Philadelphia and Liverpool, circa 1850.
