Scenes from a Southern Past John Gadsby Chapman (1808–1889), Negro Cabin , Virginia, 1833–1835. Graphite, watercolor and gouache on paper, 9 ⁹⁄₁₆" x 12⅛". Chapman sketched throughout Eastern Virginia in 1833 and 1834 anticipating his first show at the National Academy of Design. The sketch probably dates to that period.
