Revered in his time as the “best line engraver of the country,” as a young man, Alfred Jones (1819-1900) painted alongside Thomas Cole and Asher Durand, mas- ters of the Hudson River School. A founding member of the Century Club and the National Academy, his diverse skills made him the most accomplished American engraver of his generation. The Alfred Jones Collection encompasses more than a dozen works in oil and over one hundred works on paper. The American Anti- quarian Society holds the definitive collection of his engravings.
