71 Jeff R. Bridgman American Antiques Historic York County, Pennsylvania 717.502.1281 or 717.676.0545 info@jeffbridgman.com w ww.jeffbridgman.com BOOTH 3–5 Hand-carved eagle of the American Federal period, spread-winged in flight, with its majestic head curled back as if gazing over its shoulder and its talons tucked beneath its midsection. The 62" wingspan form is very unusual. Carved in the round and truly three dimensional, the sculpture hangs from a forged iron ring (original) in such a way the its horizontal depth from the wall (18") actually exceeds the vertical space that it occupies (12"). ca, 1810–1830. Extraordinary, hand-sewn, American national flag with 13 eight-pointed stars on a glazed, cornflower blur canton, 12 stripes, and its canton resting on a res stripe (war stripe / blood stripe). Found in upstate New York, the early date of its construction, ca. 1830–1850, places it among the oldest examples that have survived into the 21st century. Exceptional small size: flag approx. 35" x 36", frame 48" square. [Vertically oriented in this image.]
