Climbing Party was shown at Vose Galleries in Whorf’s 1946 solo exhibition and was likely inspired by an excursion to the Alps during his early European travels. Awestruck by the magnificent Mont Blanc, the artist wrote: “Mont Blanc is too much for a painter to hope for....The cards I sent you give little or none of that im- mense cloud world of rock and ice which towers with never ending peak and collar and chasm about the cluster of specks which is the town.” 1 Armed with years of experience, Whorf successfully translated the grandness of the snow-capped, wind-blown mountains and craggy terrain being carefully navigated by two brave souls.
