The original statue of heroic size was designed and cast in bronze by Clark Mills (1810–1883) and placed in Lafayette Park, in front of the White House in Washington, D.C., in 1853. In 1855, Mills patented the design and contracted with Cornelius & Baker to cast reductions in bronzed zinc for sale to the public. Private collection.
