The first in a series of landscape views of Staten Island by the artist, our painting may have been part of the important art collection formed by the financier August Belmont, who owned property on Staten Island. This view looks southeast along the Narrows. The coast of Brooklyn is visible in the left distance, and the Greek Revival mansion in the right middle ground is the Caleb T. Ward House (c. 1835), which still stands. Hermann Fuechsel (1833-1915) View of the Narrows from Tompkinsville, Staten Island, 1860 Oil on canvas, 19 ȵ x 39 ¼ inches, signed and dated lower right: H.
