By 1772 he was commissioned Captain in the Pennsylvania militia and became a Major General. Lieutenant John Maclellan was a first lieutenant of Company D of Thompson’s Battalion of Pennsylvania Riflemen. Dispatched with Colonel Daniel Morgan, Lieutenant Maclellan died on the journey to Quebec in 1775. His brother, also a rifleman in the company was killed in the Battle of Quebec on January 1, 1776. The tomahawk entered the Warwick Castle collection in England in the 18th century most likely as a war souvenir.
