18 www.antiquesandfineart.com DISCOVERY Pair of Pennsylvania German Fraktur The Baker Family Children’s Birth Record, ca. 1801 The Marriage Record of Josiah Baker & Elisabeth Legro, ca. 1783 H. 11½, W. 9½ inches Documented on the back and from the collection of Andy Warhol Courtesy, Leatherwood Antiques, Sandwich, MA This rare pair of Pennsylvania German Fraktur, which comprises the marriage record of Josiah Baker & Elisabeth Legro as well as the Baker family children’s birth record, is in the manner of Frederich Krebs, who was active between 1770 and 1815. The fraktur feature a remarkable provenance that includes Edith Halpert’s iconic American Folk Art Gallery in New York City and Andy Warhol’s private collection. The fraktur were later in the collections of two English antiques dealers Warhol, a Pittsburgh native and avid collector of antiquities and Americana, made frequent buying trips to antique stores, galleries, auction houses, and flea markets. After he passed away unexpectedly from surgery in 1987, Sotheby’s offered over 10,000 items from the Pop art pioneer’s vast collection. The ten-day sale, which garnered $25 million, went on to become one of the most important auctions of the decade. Leatherwood Antiques will offer the fraktur at the Metro Show in New York City from January 21–25, 2015. In remarkable condition, it retains its original legs and stretcher, which seldom survive given the entire weight of the case is supported by delicate pins connecting the legs to the skirt. Due to the superb form and exceptional condition, this high chest can be considered a masterpiece of William & Mary furniture. It has been attributed to Newport or Providence, Rhode Island, and retains the original etched brass hardware. The veneers on the upper case drawers, each having two separate panels banded by mahogany, is a feature associated with Rhode Island high chests. 15th Anniversary NOTEWORTH Y S A L E
