19th Anniversary 22 www.afamag.com | w ww.incollect.com A t the start of every new year, it’s a tradition to look forward, but also to reflect on the past. Since 2012, we at AFA have done the latter with our museum acquisition update, sharing with you the information we receive from museum press offices during the year. This year, Daniel Grant’s article (see pages 113–121) features fourteen works acquired during 2018. These range the gamut from an Art Deco perfume bottle to a barely five-inches-high sculpture by Marcel Duchamp. Grant also spotlights some trends in the museum world, including new initiatives by several institutions to acquire the work of African-American artists. Readers will also know too, that as part of this, our Anniversary issue, we always feature the loan exhibition at the Winter Show (for- merly the Winter Antiques Show). For 2019, the Nantucket Historical Association was invited to display many of its treasures. Celebrating its 125th anniversary, the NHA will tell the story of Nantucket’s diverse peoples and its industries, much of which revolved around whaling. In Collecting Nantucket, Connecting the World (pages 138–145), the NHA’s Michael Harrison shares stories about the collections included in the exhibition. Also celebrating an anniversary, is Stuart Feld, president and direc- tor of Hirschl & Adler Galleries in Manhattan, and an enduring pres- ence at the Winter Show. With the gallery’s current exhibition (through February 15), Augmenting the Canon, Recent Acquisitions of American Neo-Classical Decorative Arts, Stuart celebrates fifty years at the helm of Hirschl & Adler. Stuart and his daughter, Elizabeth, have contributed an article (pages 130–137) that showcases the daz- zling Classical furniture and objects on view in their gallery show, and which they wrote about in a beautifully illustrated scholarly catalogue by the same title. As we go forth into 2019, I wish for every community a couple like Anthony and Paula Viscogliosi. For more than a decade, they have worked to save several historic homes and landscapes, and contributed to the growth of their community by promoting the arts, education, and entrepreneurship. Their home, a 20,000-square-foot mansion in Connecticut, is the focus of this issue’s Lifestyle (pages 100–112). Thank you both for your inspirational work. Have a wonderful New Year!
