Eugene had been brought up in the court of Louis XIV at Versailles but because of his reputed effeminacy he was denied entry to the French military by Louis himself. He departed for Austria and became one of the most successful military commanders of modern European history. He was appointed Governor of the Southern Netherlands in 1716 (then under Austrian control) and built the Belvedere Palaces in Vienna.
