50th Annual Delaware Show

WENDELL D. GARRETT AWARD Winterthur is proud to announce the inaugural presentation of the Wendell D. Garrett Award, which was established to honor the memory of Wendell (1929 ‒ 2012), a member of the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture Class of 1957 and one of Winterthur’s most venerated alumni. He is certainly missed by the many fans who followed him through The Magazine Antiques, Antiques Roadshow, and appearances at conferences throughout the country. In recognition of Wendell’s unparalleled role in the field, in 1994 he was presented with The Henry Francis du Pont Award for distinguished contributions to American arts. A prolific author and editor, Wendell penned countless articles and books in a supremely articulate style. Winterthur is privileged to present this award in his name to recognize similar achievements in melding decorative arts and history. The first recipient is Gerald W. R. Ward, Senior Consulting Curator and The Katharine Lane Weems Senior Curator of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture Emeritus, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Gerry’s achievements as a writer and editor are legendary. Through his work at Yale, Winterthur, Strawbery Banke, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he has helped shape the American decorative arts field. He has had a hand in producing many of the major academic publications that have appeared over the past twenty-five years and, in the process, improved the work of fellow scholars. Like Wendell, Gerry has influenced a generation of graduate students and young professionals, most recently as an adjunct faculty member of the Sotheby’s Institute Program in American Fine and Decorative Art.
