ADA Show 2010

What makes 18th-century chairs, dressing tables, high chests, and many early American homes so pleasing to the eye? The answer starts with the application of rules of proportion and good design. Through lectures by international experts and hands-on workshops by master cabinetmakers, this symposium explores design and proportion in early American furniture and architecture. Participants will sharpen their ability to evaluate good design by learning how Americans in the past came to recognize and to judge good design through their study of English design books that were widely available in North America, their negotiation of furniture and building commissions and their close observation of finished objects and structures. Presenters will include: • Dr. Glen Andres, Christian A. Johnson Professor of the History of Art and Architecture, Middlebury College • Allan Breed, Cabinetmaker • Peter Follansbee, Joiner, Plimoth Plantation • Jeffrey Greene, Cabinetmaker • William N. Hosley, Independent Historian and Museum Consultant • Timothy Philbrick, Cabinetmaker • Dr. Anne Puetz, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London • Kemble Widmer II, Independent Furniture Historian • Philip Zimmerman, Independent Furniture Historian For information and registration, please contact Julie Orvis Marcinkiewicz at (413) 775-7179 or events@historic-deerfield.org.
