ADA Show 2018

The Connecticut Humane Society was founded in 1881 by Gertrude O. Lewis, a senior at Hartford Public High School. On April 14, 1881, the Connecticut General Assembly granted the Society a Charter, which was accepted on April 26 by the Society’s first Board of Directors. The Society is recognized as one of the early pioneers of the humanitarianism movement that spread through the United States from 1875 to 1900. It grew from a basement office in 1902 to its current headquarters in Newington as its shelter services and responsibilities multiplied. As a supporter of the pets and CHS mission, you are in good company. Many other distinguished citizens were part of the Society’s early foundation, such as Mrs. Samuel (Elizabeth) Colt, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Clemens, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Bulkeley and Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe. For 135 years, people just like you have sustained CHS and have kept pets at the forefront of charitable services statewide. Today, CHS is shifting from reactionary responses, to preventative efforts that aim to keep pets in the homes that love them, so that they don’t have to go to shelters at all. Thank you for joining CHS in its mission to save pets in need. The Connecticut Humane Society is not affiliated with any national animal welfare groups and does not receive government funding.
