Brock Churchill Hazard
5 FIG. 5 Arthur Merton Hazard (1872–1930) Reverie, c. 1905 Oil on canvas 30 x 25 inches Signed at lower right: A. M. Hazard Clements/Howcroft Photography were located just one block from his apartment. The inaugural installation was impressive. Hazard exhibited twenty-seven portraits and two murals painted over the previous ten years, many of which were being shown for the first time. A November 5, 1914 article in the Boston Evening Transcript noted that the visitor’s experience was enhanced by galleries that were, “artificially lighted by an indirect system which approximates as closely as possible the effect of daylight.” Dr. Taylor may have purchased one or more works by Hazard at this exhibition. The Letter , Woman Reading in an Interior (cover image) and Reverie are rare, early interior scenes by Hazard and are strong examples of Boston School painting in their classicism and handling.
