This arrangement means St. Michael, provider of justice in defense of God. 77: SPANISH COLONIAL CARVED WOOD BABY JESUS FRAGMENT USD 1,500 - 2,000 Guatemala, 18th c., from a large Madonna figure, Jesus holding orb with cross symbolizing "Salvador del Mundo", his right hand raised in blessing, the hand of Mary supports him; his head with a silver resplendor of rays, overall dimensions; 20"h; 12"w; resplendor, 12"w; 8"hPart of a large Madonna figure showing heavy surface deposits from candles and cooking fires, very likely the central figure from an altar in a Mayan dwelling surrounded by candles, flowers, food and other offerings.From the private collection of a Connecticut gentleman. 78: SPANISH COLONIAL CARVED COQUERA (YERBERA) AND SILVER USD 4,000 - 6,000 18th c., Alto Peru, from the workshops of the Moxos, Chiquitos or Guarani Jesuit Missions, shaped, shell-form hinged lid, the conforming body with overall carving, 6"h; 8.5"w; along with a silver CALERO used to spread lime (cal) over coca leaves, 6.5" The Jesuit Missions, dispatched by the Spanish Crown in 1615, taught various skills to the indigenous inhabitants in Alto Peru, Peru and Paraguay. The Jesuits gathered the often nomadic populations into larger communities to convert them to Christianity and make them adopt European culture. These communities guided by the Jesuits remained autonomous and isolated from Spanish colonists and Spanish rule. The Jesuits were expelled in 1767. 6.5" d; calero 5.75" (not incl. chain and pin)The coca leaves were dampened before chewing. The result of lime plus moisture produces slaked limed which is widely used for pickling.
