Standing up, these were used as candle holders. 94: (2) SPANISH COLONIAL SILVER MOUNTED COCONUT CUPS USD 1,500 - 2,000 both with embossed silver foot, one lidded with rooster finial and double dragon handles, traces of gilding, 6"h; 3.75" w; the second cup is open with double with dragon handles , 4.5"h; 4"w 95: SPANISH COLONIAL BRASS/GILT MOUNTED GOURD USD 800 - 1,200 possibly Argentina, early 19th c., the handle mounted with rearing animal with chain extending to lid; three-legged with leaf knees and ball and claw feet; incised decoration on gourd, 4.75"h; 3"wMount probably is brass, could be silver gilt. 96: SPANISH COLONIAL SILVER MOUNTED YERBA MATE CUP USD 800 - 1,200 pear shaped black gourd, elaborate hinged lid, the ornate handle with inset faceted glass stone, four scrolling feet, 4.5"h; 2.5" max. diam. 97: (2) ANTIQUE GUATEMALAN BEADED NECKLACES / CHACHALES USD 1,500 - 2,000 double strands of coral and various shaped silver beads and objects; each with a pendant of large 19th c. silver coin adorned with smaller coins, 18.5" and 23.5 lengthsFrom the collection of a Connecticut gentleman. "I purchased most of my chachales from Julio Matzariegos in Patzun, Guatemala from 1965 to 1968. Some had to be restrung. He was later killed when his jeep turned over on him." Coral and silver were considered signs of wealth for both the Spaniards and the Maya. The Maya passed their coral from generation to generation. The West Coast of Guatemala provided a source of coral for centuries until the supply was exhausted by the Spaniards n the early 18th c.
