Established in 1947, Historic Charleston Foundation is dedicated to preserving and protecting the architectural, historical and cultural character of Charleston and its Lowcountry environs, and to educating the public about Charleston’s history and the benefits that are derived from preservation. The Foundation delivers its message through • active advocacy and participation in community planning. • the generosity of preservation-minded donors. • enhancing public awareness and support of preservation through education programs and heritage tours. • conservation and long-term preservation of historically significant properties through purchase and resale, acquisition and rehabilitation, easements, covenants and interpretation. • rehabilitating historic neighborhoods and protecting quality of life for residents. • interpreting museum properties and objects of historical significance. • providing technical assistance to preservation efforts. • identifying objects with a strong association to Charleston and adapting them for educational purposes and reproduction. • documenting Charleston’s architectural heritage. • encouraging the study and publication of historical, archeological and architectural research. • maintaining financial and organizational independence. • the Foundation’s earned-income programs, including the annual spring Festival of Houses and Gardens, the Charleston Antiques Show, licensed products program, and retail shops. • the interpretation of its collections and two museum sites: the Nathaniel Russell House, c. 1808, and the Aiken-Rhett House, c. 1820.
