According to art historian Alfred C. Harrison Jr., “This … work dates fromBierstadt’s first trip to Germany, during which time he developed with surprising rapidity into a fine landscape painter. It can be dated specifically to the summer of 1856 when the artist took a sketching tour throughWestphalia in the company of WorthingtonWhittredge and other American artists. They proceeded on to Rome, where Bierstadt sketched the Arch of Octavius in preparation for his major painting of that subject dated 1858. On the back of the paper of [this] landscape, can be found drawings of arches similar to the Arch of Octavius, as well as the inscription, ‘Westphalia, Germany’ in Bierstadt’s hand.” $50,000–75,000
