Annual Delaware Antiques Show 2019

Fig. 5. Belknap Research Library in Winterthur’s south wing, ca. 1957. Winterthur Archives decorative arts. That appreciation for good design, no matter the decade, certainly included midcentury modern furniture. The 1950s and 1960s saw the expansion of both Winterthur’s mission and footprint, including professional offices, state-of-the-art conservation labs, and a modern visitor pavilion. Each of those spaces was designed and furnished in the new American style, midcentury modern, a fresh and alternative aesthetic that seamlessly highlighted H. F. du Pont’s appreciation for Americana of all persuasions. Carrie Greif, a 2019 graduate of the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture, is the Tiffany and Co. Curatorial Intern in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. — 102 —
