prestigious society of chivalry, in addition to the family orders given to her by her husband, King George V, and her son, King George VI, to recognize her service to the Crown. While the exhibition focuses primarily on the work of The Crown ’s cinematic costume designers, it also highlights the work of the Windsor family’s most trusted dress designer, Norman Hartnell. Hartnell designed Queen Mary’s dress as well as the wedding dresses worn by Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret (fig. 4) . He was responsible for the signature looks of the Queen in the early years of her reign and designed many of the dresses that are replicated in the exhibition. The gowns for the weddings of the royal princesses reflect not only differences in their personalities but also the fashions of their time— Elizabeth’s showing the classic lines of 1947 and Margaret’s the more modern lines of the early 1960s.
