At Boccara Gallery, New York November 5–December 20 To complement the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Man Ray exhibition, Boccara Gallery will inaugurate its new location at 303 Fifth Avenue in New York with a presentation of the “Revolving Doors” tapestry series, “a chapter of the artist’s career that remains relatively unknown to the general public,” according to Didier Marien, founder and CEO of Boccara and an art tapestry expert with 30 years of experience. The show includes ten modernist tapestries woven from Man Ray’s 1916 paper collages in 1973 by Atelier 3, the renowned Parisian tapestry workshop. This is first time all ten tapestries shown in the United States. “Authorized by the artist and produced in editions of only six per design by weavers Atelier 3, these large-scale works fuse Surrealist abstraction with the depth and tactility of fine textiles,” Marien says. The Revolving Doors collages — with their bold geometry, vivid color, and themes of “transition and transformation,” as Marien explains — were first exhibited in 1919 at the Daniel Gallery in New York on a rotating stand, creating a dynamic, interactive viewing experience. Over fifty years later, the artist partnered with Atelier 3 to translate these designs into wool tapestries, preserving their graphic clarity while adding texture and dimensionality. “Man Ray worked with Atelier 3 to transform his abstract geometric collages into woven masterpieces. The resulting tapestries, created under Man Ray’s guidance, merge the modernist aesthetic of his collages with the tactile qualities of weaving and creativity of Atelier 3,” Marien says.
