40 www.incollect.com Glen Leroux: A Tastemaker Talks Glen Leroux Antiques 56 Riverside Avenue, Westport, CT 06880 203.227.8030 glenlerouxantiques.com Glen Leroux has been dealing in Mid-Century Modern and 20th-century decorative arts in Westport, Connecticut, since 1983. Incollect spoke with him about his passion for fine arts and decorating, and his enduring love for the elegance, glamour, and sophistication of the Golden Age of Hollywood. What drives your passion for design? My passion grew from watching Hollywood movies as a child. The Art Deco sets, the glamour of it all, and the photography from the period became my love. George Hurrell, Clarence Sinclair Bull, and John Engstead all shaped my earliest collection of portrait photography. So, my initial design pieces were not surprisingly all Art Deco and Hollywood Regency. What do you specialize in today as a design dealer? The same thing: the genre I have dealt in and loved for more than 43 years, Art Deco and Hollywood Regency. My taste has been influenced by changing times and evolved as I developed more confidence. I started as a Mid-Century Modern dealer at a time when it was not as popular as it is today. I see myself as a bit of a visionary because I loved things that later became the “in-demand” style. Who are your favorite designers? My favorite designers remain Tommi Parzinger, the wonderfully talented Karl Springer, the masterful Edward Wormley, Gilbert Rhode, and Dorothy Draper. I think I have always been a designer at heart. You also love to show art, decorative art, and photography alongside design. What’s your philosophy on that mixture? I have never been limited to showing one collectible category. I love the beauty in all things, so I have always sold chandeliers, lighting, furniture, glass, sculpture, paintings, and even great designer estate jewelry. My passion has no limits. I’m proud to say I have exhibited in fairs across the country for decades, and I love that people now stand in front of my booths and say, ‘That’s a Glen Leroux booth. You can always tell!’ HAPPENINGS Set of three 1950s Swedish inlaid tables. Photo courtesy Glen Leroux. C M Y CM MY CY CMY K
