Incollect Magazine - Issue 13

54 www.incollect.com TRIBUTE Howard and Amy at The Newport Show. When we lost Howard Rehs to ALS in November, we lost a truly incredible person. Known as a leading authority on French Academic art, he authored catalogues raisonnés and contributed significant scholarship to the field. Collectors, researchers, and institutions from around the world turned to him for his unmatched knowledge, counsel, and authentication. A generational family business, Howard started working at the gallery with his father and uncle when he was 13 and became president soon after graduating from NYU. As the business grew, he continued the family tradition and brought in his children, Lance and Alyssa, to spearhead Rehs Contemporary. In 2023, he opened a much larger New York gallery at 20 West 55th Street. Howard was one of my favorite people in the art world. His generosity, honesty, humor, wit, knowledge, and welcoming ways were contagious. At shows, Rehs Galleries became the booth to visit — not just for the art — but for the happy hour cocktails, snacks, laughter, and camaraderie, always a mini-party with Howard sporting his Stubbs & Wootton shoes, mixing up potent libations with Amy, Lance, and Alyssa for all who stopped by. My three children always ask about Howard and his Stuart Dunkel mouse paintings. After every show, my wife Susane always commented how Howard and his wife Amy were the friendliest and warmest people she had ever met at an art show. I was fortunate and honored to have known Howard. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten. We love you, Howard! — John Smiroldo, Founder and President, Incollect Howard L.
