Incollect Magazine - Issue 14
32 www.incollect.com HAPPENINGS Outcast Studios has introduced a new series of designs that fuse embellished bronze structures with one-of-a-kind hot glass surfaces. “The inspiration for this series was nature,” says Gregory Nangle, founder of Outcast Studios. “Specifically, I was inspired to create the series by observing a tree branch, which I saw suspended in a frozen stream in the woods on Maine’s rural coast this winter.” Nangle was captivated by the way the ice enveloped the branch, and in the studio, began fusing together hot glass and cast metal in innovative ways. The glass locks into the form of the bronze base, creating optical effects unique to this technique. “Using real tree branches cast in bronze and incorporating organic matter in the glass, I am able to recreate naturalistic scenes in furniture,” Nangle says. The collection currently focuses primarily on tables — coffee tables and side tables, and several striking bespoke consoles recently crafted for Karyn DiGiorgio, a San Francisco interior designer. “This is a fun series for me,” Nangle says, “they are genuinely organic. I am making objects out of what I see in the landscape, but instead of making a landscape painting, I am making a sculpture out of nature and then framing it as furniture.” Designs will be officially launched and made available through Studio Van den Akker New York beginning late May.
