Rowney & Co.” stamp and partial framer’s label en verso, 30 in. x 25 in., antique gilt frame. $4000/6000 Note: The great-great-granddaughter of Ambroise Haydel, who founded Whitney Plantation (formerly Habitation Haydel) in St. John the Baptist Parish, Evelina Haydel was the daughter of Alphonse Haydel (1792-1832) and Milicert Webre (1805-1866). Evelina was also the niece of Marie Azelie Haydel (1790- 1863), who inherited Whitney Plantation from her husband, Marcellin Haydel (1788-1839). She married Sosthène Barre in 1847, and the couple is listed on the 1850 United States Federal Census as living with their children, Evelina’s widowed mother, and her siblings, on Alphonse Haydel’s estate near her aunt’s property. Whitney Plantation has recently been beautifully restored and opened to the public as the only historical plantation museum with a focus on slavery. 321.
