A Lalique “Tourbillons” Clear Crystal Vase , engraved “Lalique France”, embossed with abstract geometric pattern of whirlwinds, numbered “L005”, accompanied with original box, height 8 1/4 in., diameter 7 7/8 in. $1500/2500 Provenance: Collection of Dr. Roger Hatchette, New Orleans, LA. Note: At the turn of the twentieth century, René- Jules Lalique began his career in glass making by incorporating small, ornate pieces into jewelry. After many years as a successful jewelry designer, he shifted his focus to creating decorative pieces for the home beginning with small objects such as perfume bottles and transitioning to larger pieces such as vases and bowls. Tourbillons , French for whirlwinds, represents one of Lalique’s earliest vase designs and incorporates the contemporary, abstract motif inherent to the industrial era in which he developed his highly skilled glass-pressing technique. The vase presented here is a later edition of the original circa 1925 design included in the collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Corning Museum of Glass. References: Elliot, Kelley Jo.
