An Elkington Silverplate “Milton Shield” , 19th c., marked “Morel Laudeuil, fecit, 1866” and “Elkington & Co.”, mounted on a crimson velvet shield, height 34 in., width 25 1/2 in. $1500/2500 Note: The “Milton Shield” presented here is a replica of the original design made for the Paris Exhibition of 1867. The illustration in the central medallion represents a scene in John Milton’s Paradise Lost in which the Archangel Raphael narrates to Adam and Eve the story of the rebellion of Archangel Lucifer. To execute the design, Elkington & Company selected Leonard Morel-Ladeuil (French, 1815-1888), who was considered one of the greatest silver designers of the day. The artist received a gold medal at the Exhibition for his work and the piece was ultimately purchased by the Victoria & Albert Museum, where it is now on display in the British Galleries.
