Newport Show 2017

The Boys & Girls Club of Newport County Proudly Serving the Community Since 1956 This year, the Boys & Girls Club of Newport County celebrated an important milestone — 60 years of providing valuable programs and services to our local community. The Club began many years ago because of the steadfast belief of our local community leaders that our youth deserved a place to call their own; a place that would care and listen; a place that would provide hope and opportunity. Through their dedication and commitment, the Club flourished, adding a pool and then a gym, expanding its programs and offerings and reaching youth far beyond the city limits and across generations. Today, BGC has continued that success and has partnered with many local leaders to provide the necessary assistance needed by so many families. To share a few examples of how the Club is making a difference: • In collaboration with Newport Partnership for Families, the Club is co-leading the RI Working Cities partnership to lift residents out of poverty through enhanced workforce development. • BGC leads the physical and emotional health working group for the Newport Health Equity Zone, a place-based health initiative in the North End and Broadway neighborhoods. • The Club works closely with the Newport Public Schools on the Chronic Early Absenteeism/Truancy Reduction Initiative providing support and mentoring to youth most at risk. • In the 2016/2017 school year, BGC partnered with Newport Area Career & Technical Center to provide “Essential Skills” training for career development and workforce readiness. • In 2016, the Club served more than 5,500 youth and provided 28,000 snacks and/or meals to its members.
