✷ 124 ✷ FROM THE COLLECTION OF… FROM THE COLLECTION OF… ENRIQUE GOYTIZOLO GEORGIANMANOR ANTIQUES, FAIRHAVEN, MA Male Power Fetish Sculpture 20th century Height: 24 inches Although I deal in formal and traditional antiques, personally I love objects with a rustic or primitive feeling, especially made of pottery or wood. Several years ago I found this enchanting carving and I was immediately drawn to it, without knowing the enormous joy that it was going to bring to my life. It is a male power fetish sculpture (NKISI) from BA Congo, DRC. It is beautifully carved from a piece of hardwood, painted with white clay to symbolize dead skin, and further decorated with metal buttons. I admire this piece for its re ective, inward expression. e square well on its stomach serves as a container for potent ingredients used in magic and medicine. e intense collaboration between the sculptor and the initiated priest (NGANGA) transformed it into an object capable of healing illness, settling disputes, and punishing wrongdoers. Fetishes were protective gures used by individuals, families, or whole communities to destroy or weaken evil spirits. I was drawn immediately to mechanical banks and obtained my rst one in 1969. Steve and I raked leaves, delivered newspapers, babysat and shoveled snow to raise funds for our newfound passion of collecting! is particular bank, the “Humpty Dumpty,” was obtained in 1999. It was found on ebay.com , by a friend of mine, who called me and stated, “ ere is a bank with your name on it!” I then proceeded to leave a substantial bid. Before it sold, six friends (collectors/dealers) had called me about this bank. ese people thought of me before thinking of pro ting from the “Bank of Leon.” I will always treasure this bank because it demonstrated to me that there are people in this world that think of others before themselves.
