W 142 W From the Collection of… From the Collection of… Jeffrey Tillou Jeffrey Tillou Antiques, Litchfield, CT “Bartles” Carved Monkey Holding a Ball Probably American, circa 1850–1875 This is one of the more recent additions to our collection. Under our new criteria, an acquisition must be approved by all family members (including four teenage boys), it must bring a smile to our faces, the piece has to have the right fit in our home, and, of course, the object must have a spectacular surface, fabulous form, and aesthetic appeal. This wonderful piece of folk art captures the playful, innocent and primitive mannerisms of this monkey. His animated face and articulated hands and feet are features that give this piece great “folk art” presence. “Bartles” sits on top of a Federal card table. Jonathan Trace Jonathan Trace, Portsmouth, NH A north Italian bronze standing lion, late 16th century. This lion is a powerful example of late Renaissance art. It fits in very well in our home of eclectic objects.
