Litchfield, CT . 860-567-9693 Nantucket Harbor Scene American School, Unsigned, ca. 1890 Oil on canvas 8¾" x 26¼", 17⅛" x 35" (framed) Condition: Excellent condition is tranquil view overlooking Nantucket harbor is captured from the vantage point of the steeple of the Old North Vestry, which was built in 1725. ough a larger Second Congregational Church was built in 1834 to accommodate the growing parish the First Church remains in use, and visitors can still climb the 93 tower steps to overlook the harbor from the same place today. e unusual size as well as the early depiction of the harbor furthers the desirability of this rare piece. ough ferry service to Nantucket originated in 1817 it did not become regular until the 1870s. e two ferries pictured here are likely the Martha’s Vineyard, which ran from 1871 to about 1920, and the Nantucket, which ran from 1886 to just after 1905.
