Greek masterpiece, the Delphi Charioteer, standing with reins in hand, wearing the traditional garb, a xystis , and with characteristic amber eyes. This exact replica pro- duced by Felix de Weldon, around 1950, with the permission of the Greek government was taken from the original ca. 474 B.C statue. 70 ins. high; metal base 24 ins. square (millstone sold separatel y). The original work resides at the Delphi Archaeological Museum. Provenance: Ex-collection Felix de Weldon (1907-2003), the Austrian- born American sculptor known for his monuments, most famously for the Iwo Jima memorial (1954). This statue was displayed in the gardens at Beacon Rock, Newport, RI, the estate owned by de Weldon from 1951 to 1996.
