This example is marked “I” on the seat frame and back rail and is identical to two stools marked “II” and “III” in the collection of James Logan’s home, Stenton in Germantown and likely descended in the Logan/Norris/Dickinson families associated with that property. A rare and artistically successful example of mid-18th century Philadelphia seating furniture. All original except upholstery and finish. Height: 17.5” For a detailed discussion of the chairs at Stenton, see Dr. Phillip Zimmerman, “Eighteenth Century Chairs at Stenton,” The Magazine Antiques (May 2003): 122-29.
