English, ca. 1980. Clapp attended the Bristol Art School in the late 1940s-early 1950s, then taught at a secondary school and later lectured at Liverpool University. He and his wife, Jilliann, whom he’d met at art school, kept a farm, "Shenstone", in Over Kellet, Lancashire. There he found inspiration in the farm animals, recreating some of his favorites in the fine, hard stone known as Hopton-Wood limestone quarried in nearby Middleton, Derbyshire.
