26 Serving the Educational Needs of Boys in Southeast D.C. Our Mission The Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys is an Episcopal school for children of low-income families that welcomes boys of all faith traditions. Working in close partnership with our students and their families, we strive to create an en- vironment where every boys receives the structured support required to fully develop his unique gifts. About the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys The Bishop Walker School (BWS) is a tuition-free private school for boys from low -income families in Southeast Washington. Opened in 2008, BWS now serves boys in junior-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade and will add one class each year until grade eight for a total enrollment of 160 stu- dents. The school’s program is built around curric- ula that integrate cognitive, physical, social, and emotional learning. Each day, children are encouraged to participate in whole-class activities, small groups, and individual inter- actions with their teachers. BWS strives to help our students make good choices and to be accountable for their actions, which will equip them to be both exemplary students and good citizens. The Bishop Walker School is fully funded by private contributions. We seek to foster the love of learning, intellectual curiosity, spiritual foundation, and moral character each boy will need to achieve his fullest potential as a student, as a citizen, and as a child of God.
