Washington Winter Show 2012

14 T he Broad Creek Historic District is an ancient and diverse community along the Potomac River, first charted by Captain John Smith, near Fort Washington. English and African-American families settled near its Indian hamlets and a port town was chartered in 1706. Broad Creek is the first footprint of such settlement in the national capital area, and Prince George’s County’s oldest historic district. Broad Creek Historic District WSSC, a property owner in Broad Creek for forty years, proudly announces our plan to enlarge the Commission’s station there and to enhance the facility’s neocolonial exteriors. WSSC is a good neighbor to this historic rural community. “Broad Creek, Washington Area’s First Footprint,” 2011, Sculptor Marjorie Forges Courtesy Broad Creek Historic District “Landscape with broad creek at sunset,” 1891, Potomac River artist Max Weyl Courtesy Randy Crawford/David Turner The Broad Creek Pumping Station in Fort Washington, MD Annex will house electrical/Mechanical equipment. The style of the Annex mimics an 18th century farmhouse with a gambrel roof. To achieve the historical style, the addition implements colonial red brick veneer at its base to simulate brick foundation walls, horizontal Hardi-plank siding with vertical trim at its corners and a simple dentil molding to articulate the top of the wall below the soffit. Closed shut- ters at each elevation and dormers at the roof help make the addition appear less industrial. Concrete shingles provide trouble free maintenance, with the appearance of old wood shingles used in the early 1700’s.
