Walker School for Boys A School of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington B y every measure, from reading and math proficiency to school suspensions and high school graduation, African American boys lag behind their peers from other ethnic groups. Boys in large urban school districts tend to fare the worst. This well-documented “achievement gap” is grounded in the devastating impact of poverty and low expectations. The Bishop Walker School seeks to eliminate the achievement gap for our students by providing a stimulating and nurturing environment rich with positive role models and access to a wide array of learning opportunities. We provide the academic, emotional, spiritual and social supports our students need, while holding them accountable to the high standards we know they are capable of meeting. BWS opened in 2008 with a junior- kindergarten class and has grown annually through the addition of a new grade level. Now serving boys in junior-kindergarten through grade two, our vision is to continue to add one class per year through grade eight. As a tuition-free private school we rely on contributions and donated services. To make a gift, visit: www.donatebws.org . As a 501(c )(3) your gifts to BWS are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. photos courtesy of Valerie Woody
