Illustrated in "Gilroy was good for Guinness", by David Hughes, page 190. Gilroy wrote in pencil at the top of the painting, "Apologies to James Montgomery Flagg", the original illustrator of the famous 1917 poster. This was Gilroy's way of saying, I'm so sorry, but I had to do it, since he knew this image would never have been approved for publication. Painted in 1950 From our collection of over 100 original oil on canvas paintings for Guinness by Gilroy, R. Lander, R. Clifford, P. Hobarth and W. Brearley.
