U.S. Embassy Paris Italian authorities and specialists: a powerful mark of friendship between the U.S. and Italy. A Peale in Paris A striking full-length portrait of President George Washington hangs in the U.S. Ambassador’s residence in Paris, France. A gift to the United States from the estate of an American art collector in 1986, George Washington at the Battle of Princeton, was attributed to America’s preeminent 18th-century portraitist, Charles Willson Peale. However, its precise provenance was unknown. Thanks to the public-private partnership between the Fund to Conserve U.S. Diplomatic Treasures Abroad and the State Department’s Office of Cultural Heritage an authentication and conservation analysis was launched to finally determine the painting’s provenance. French and American experts spent countless hours painstakingly analyzing the portrait, conducting scholarly and scientific research, and minutely comparing the canvas to other works definitively completed by Peale. In 2023, the Office of Cultural Heritage announced that the portrait is indeed the work of Charles Willson Peale, and it has since been painstakingly conserved. A Royal Gift: Tangier American Legation, Tangier, Morocco The American Legation in Tangier was the very first property abroad owned by the United States. Morocco’s Sultan, Moulay Suliman, presented it in 1821 as a gift to the American people as a symbol of enduring friendship. The Kingdom of Morocco already held a special place in U.S. history as the first nation to recognize the sovereignty of the fledgling American Republic in 1777. Soon after, the Traditional Moroccan mosaic tiles and painting is found throughout the Tangier American Legation. Brandon Hull, HULLFILM
