46 Moroccan-American Treaty of Peace and Friendship, signed in 1786 and still in force today, initiated America’s longest unbroken treaty relationship. The Legation served for a record 140 years as a U.S. diplomatic post, hosting a succession of historic events central to America’s story. An 1865 treaty among a dozen nations, foreshadowing the 1945 United Nations Charter, was signed there. America’s first amphibious landings of WorldWar II, 1942s Operation Torch, were prepared there. The property is leased from the U.S. by an American- based nonprofit which operates the Legation museum, a research library, and cultural center. The site’s connection to numerous historic events led to its designation in 1982 as a U.S. National Historic Landmark, the only one located abroad. U.S. Ambassador’s Residence, Villa Petschek, Prague, Czech Republic A neo-Baroque residence designed and built by Otto Petschek between 1924–1929, Villa Petschek was originally leased by the United States to serve as an ambassadorial residence. Permanently acquired as part The Tangier American Legation, the United States first property abroad, welcomes over 30,000 visitors to the Legation Museum annually. Brandon Hull, HULLFILM.
