This region was one of the most important centers in America for the teaching and produc- tion of embroidered pictures by young girls in private academies from the mid-eighteenth to the early nineteenth-centuries. As a group, these needleworks provide audiences today with insight into the nature of women’s schooling before the advent of widespread public education. In the Fall of 2011, a 96-page book, published in association with Wesleyan University Press, will be available. Use the order form below to pre-order your copy at a special pre-publication price. With Needle and Brush: Schoolgirl Embroidery from the Connecticut River Valley is the first book exclusively devoted to the needlework of this region. The lead essay by experts Carol and Stephen Huber describes the extraordinary samplers, canvaswork, and silk embroideries pro- duced by teachers and students in the Valley. Susan P. Schoelwer, Curator of George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, examines the work produced at the Misses Pattens’ school in Hartford. Florence Griswold Museum Curator Amy Kurtz Lansing provides an introduction to the culture of the Connecticut River Valley. Illustrated object entries by the Hubers discuss individual works.
