Dudley Murphy , original Hermann Dudley Murphy frame, dated 1926 Soon after handing over the managerial reins of his frame shop, Murphy began producing the carefully arranged floral still lifes for which he is today best known. In Pink and White Peonies , the artist’s ap- preciation for light and form can be seen in the delicate blossoms, sharp edges of the vase and dark green leaves. Murphy’s aesthetic skills are further demonstrated in the accompanying frame, hand-carved by the artist in 1926. Vose Galleries has enjoyed a long association with Hermann Dudley Murphy, beginning with an exhibition of his marines and winter scenes in 1913. This show was followed by three subsequent solo exhibitions in 1916, 1925 and 1928. Robert C. Vose (1873-1964) and Hermann Dudley Murphy developed a close friendship, and in 1915, Murphy sold his Carrig-Rohane frame shop to the gallery in order to devote his energy to designing frames and painting.
